Jara is a nonprofit on a mission to provide quality K-12 e-learning and distance learning to the 816 Million children in high-poverty and low-connectivity communities globally through the Jara Unit, the world’s first renewable energy-powered e-learning device that works in remote communities.

Through the Develop for Good Program, I led a team of 8 designers to design the UI for Jara Unit. Our team received the Most Creative Award and Most Impactful Award out of 130+ tech nonprofit teams on Demo Day.

Disturbing

Students expressed roommates disturbing them during quiet hours or interrupting meetings.

"My roommate would barge in while I was interviewing or in the middle of an important call"

Chore Management

Students often argue with roommates regarding chore rotation and responsibilities.

"We'd always argue about who's turn it is to take out the trash or swiffer"

Guest Rules

Students were bothered with roommates having guests over.

"We all agreed to not have guests during the weekdays but because we didn't have any formal rules, they'd overstep boundaries"

Our user group comprises students between the ages of 10-13. They live in rural Nepal and they do not have easy access to digital educational materials, everyday gadgets, and stable internet and electricity. While they are described as more patient than what is considered the average child of the same age in the West, we are faced with the challenge of creating software that would take advantage of this mostly shared trait while also aiding the useful hardware in becoming the most optimum learning tool.

The start of the project was marked by the creation of mood boards as visualized by all the design members. It was at this step that we came to an agreement on what the main feel and look of the platform would be. Characterized with earthy colors, we took to researching the most optimum shades of green. There was an emphasis on being as accessible as possible - taking special study in color blindness as green is a notorious color in this space.

Once that was settled, we looked through even more UI on Behance and discovered that a key trait in a lot of ed-tech software was the use of avatars. They personalize the experience and also make the target audience (mostly children), excited about going back to study. As we were gunning to be as inclusive as possible as well as be respectful of the culture and environment of our targeted users, we optioned working with avatars that are non-human but can be customizable to bring in that element of personalization and fun.

At the start of the project, we had a vision to create a learning platform that would cater to both students and teachers. Our goal was to provide a seamless learning experience while also offering comprehensive administrative functions for teachers. However, we realized that we needed to refine our scope and prioritize certain features. This meant that we had to put aside some of the teacher-oriented functionalities and focus on creating an interface for the students.

Our main objective was to create an engaging and user-friendly experience for students. We successfully implemented various elements such as the student dashboard, interactive games, and quizzes with a unique feedback looping system into the evolving UI. Our team worked to ensure that every detail was meticulously designed and implemented and that every component was seamlessly integrated into the Jara Unit's existing framework.

All wireframes and designs were made on Figma. Once we chose a color palette backed by research, we created wireframes to get a rough idea of each screen layout. We did this for the registration, home, profile dashboard, courses, quizzes, and games screens. To do so, we listed out major requirements (e.g, features) for each screen.

Our team primarily used React, HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Python to develop the frontend and backend of the app. We are storing some user metrics in our database, such as when users enter their information during the registration process. Further, we develop some core features of the Jara unit, including the homepage, course page, and games page, as well as the interface of a student account. In particular, we focused on ensuring that our features are able to be navigated using the physical buttons on the Jara unit.

The images that we used were kindly provided by the design team. We ensured that the end result was to scale with the screen dimensions of the Jara unit.

We’re excited to continue working on features such as the quizzes feature, and as we add more course content in our database.
